Conan Gray’s “Overdrive” Lyrics Meaning

The title of this song (“Overdrive”) is derived from automobile jargon. However, within the context of the lyrics it has nothing to do with cars but rather serves as a metaphor. And what it points to is the singer rushing – so to speak – into a romantic relationship.

That is to say that he just recently met the addressee, his new lady, “on the weekend”. But the strong feelings he developed for her in such a short amount of time resulted in him “diving off of the deep end”. That is to say that he committed himself to said romance with reckless abandon. And to some extent it can be said that he is accordingly alarmed by his decision to do so, as he acknowledges the “danger” involved in the first place.

However, such a sentiment of caution is not what defines this song. Rather what we have here is Conan being so smitten by this lady that he is taking an “all or nothing” approach to their romance. And he is also encouraging her to do the same.  Indeed the overall feeling of recklessness on his behalf is mitigated by the joy he is feeling due to having her by his side.

But when we alluded to his strong level of commitment earlier, this is not to imply that he is asking the addressee to get married just after meeting her. Rather being in “overdrive” is more about reveling in the moment, i.e. not being concerned with the “labels” which tend define the relationship. And on top of that the overall unpredictability of the scenario, once again in the eyes of the singer, adds to the overall thrill.

And conversely, possessing such an arguably-hurried disposition does not mean that he intends on using this lady. Instead he is more concerned with enjoying the moment as opposed to pondering over the future of their union. In fact perhaps the best way to describe this is as a love-at-first-sight type of scenario. The vocalist appears to be totally smitten. And, perhaps as a testament to his youth and its associated hormone levels, patience has been thrown out the window in terms of slowly cultivating a bond with the apple of his eye. Being in “overdrive” does not afford one the luxury of going slow.

But that being said, he is ready to “ride or die” for his shorty. That means that once again he is going all-in, not holding anything back. So this does not read as a case of a dude intending to use a girl for a quick lay, even though there is a hasty-sexual undertone present in the lyrics. Instead by all indications, at the moment at least he is truly and genuinely in love.
