“Better Than Me” by Hinder

Cody Hanson described “Better Than Me” as being “a very-personal song”, which is something a listener can pick up on him or herself based on the wording of the second verse in particular. And as for the title, as relayed in full within the chorus, it reads “you deserve better than me”.

So of course with such lingo in tow, who the vocalist is addressing is his significant other or more specifically in this case, his ex.

And all wording considered, even though he is under the impression that she ‘deserves better’ than him, it isn’t such that he’s actually encouraging her to find another guy. Instead, Austin is learning the hard way just how unsatisfactory life is without her. But he isn’t compelled to just throw his hat back into the ring, as the narrator seems to take exclusive blame for the relationship falling apart.

In other words, the overall implication is that even if he were to get her back, Winkler understands that he’s liable to make the same mistakes, i.e. being painfully dishonest, all over again.

Hinder

Hinder is a band of rockers from Oklahoma City that has been around since the mid-aughts. Between 2000 and 2017, they’ve dropped six studio albums with only one of them, their debut “Extreme Behavior”, managing to go platinum.

It is also from that project that we get “Better Than Me”.

When was “Better Than Me” released?

Universal Republic released “Better Than Me” as a single on 6 February 2007.  This single went on to enjoy great success in the United States. For instance, it appeared on five different US Billboard charts. As of today, it stands as the second-biggest hit in Hinder’s catalog (after “Lips of An Angel“, which also appears on the aforementioned album).

The entire Hinder crew is credited with writing “Better Than Me”. That being said, individual authorship has been granted to the band’s original frontman, Austin John Winkler, as well as the track’s producer, Brian Howes.
