“Best Friend” by Conan Gray – Tune Facts

“Best Friend” by Conan Gray

This is, as implied by its title (“Best Friend”), a friendship song. There really isn’t anything extraordinary being said per se. The thesis sentiment basically revolves around the vocalist celebrating the addressee as his bestie, i.e. the individual he is closer to than anyone else on Earth. And all things considered, as with the other songs found on “Superache”, it really isn’t abundantly clear if said addressee is a guy or girl, even though this piece does sport a romantic undertone.

That said, it has been reported that this song is supposed to be about one Ashley, Conan’s bestie since childhood, who’s actually namedropped in another “Superache” song called “Disaster” (which directly precedes “Best Friend” on the playlist). But as verified by Genius, Gray is also on record as saying that the inspiration behind this piece is “a bunch of different friends”. In the process, the singer also notes that he’s personally never been in a romantic relationship.

Further, Conan has explained that he takes friendship very seriously. And in some instances the lyrics do read as if the addressee is more than one person, considering that said entity is referred to as “them”.
