“Cold As You” by Taylor Swift – Tune Facts

“Cold As You” by Taylor Swift

In “Cold As You”, the narrator (Taylor Swift) bluntly acknowledges the fact that her partner is unable to reciprocate her love and for that matter is undeserving of her effort. It is clear throughout the lines that the speaker was very serious about preserving the relationship and giving all the love she could afford. However, attempts to create a mutual atmosphere was constantly met with indifference from his end.

Taylor begins by confessing that she was denied of any kind of affection from this person and resorted to picking fights just to feel some type of emotion. Apparently, he does whatever pleases himself because he is not in love with her, but only pretends so he can continue enjoying the benefits of dating her.

A very Cold Lover

She uses ‘rain’ as a metaphor describing how depressing the relationship has become. In the chorus, Taylor seems to have garnered some strength to demand that he walks away quietly. She says this because she has observed how pretentious her partner is and does not want him to defend the fake love he has for her. She expresses her emotional pain by contrasting the different meanings of cold to describe her ex, i.e unemotional, and physical coldness of a place. Interestingly, Taylor may be suggesting that her former partner is even colder than her hometown in Pennsylvania, which usually has an average temperature of 11 degrees Celsius.

The singer’s message is even clearer in the subsequent lines as she details how her ex did not give her a chance to be emotionally synchronized with him. She uses metaphors such as walls and ‘gray paints’ to signify the confusion, gloom and barriers she had to deal with. Taylor goes on to state how willing she was to love him despite his flaws with the hope of some kind of change. However, she is finally hit with the reality that he never cared no matter her sacrifice or the tears she shed. Ultimately, the intensity of her emotional scars causes her to realize that the best thing for her is to put an end to this strenuous affair.
