Conan Gray’s “The Story” Lyrics Meaning

“The Story” is largely based on Conan Gray and his peers being members of a troubled generation. So for example, the first verse centers on a 16-year old boy and girl who are the victims of some type of abuse(s) which apparently leads to the two deciding to commit suicide.

The second verse focuses on a couple of boys who seemingly have homosexual urges which they supplant despite possessing strong feelings for each other. And they keep this up until eventually they move to two different states.

Then the third verse is about the singer himself making something like a pact with one of his besties to save up money so they “could both run away”. The reason they have resolved to do so is because ‘both their parents were evil’, insinuating that they too were victims of abuse. And eventually they do depart albeit separately, so now he is ‘wondering if she’s alright’.

And in all of these situations he chalks up the persecution these children suffer as being “just the way the world works”. But his concluding sentiment is that such is “not the end of the story”. In other words, said youth can still work towards bringing about the desired changes in their lives, regardless of being dealt a bad hand in life so to speak.
