“Goodbye” by LP – Tune Facts

“Goodbye” by LP

On this song, LP is addressing a fellow female who is obviously a romantic interest.  And no, she is not doing so simply for artistic purposes, as when combining the gender of the addressee with the physical appearance of the vocalist, it is correct safe to assume that LP is in fact a lesbian.  And underneath all of the poetic metaphors and even musings in foreign languages, what Goodbye is obviously based on is the singer breaking up with said individual.

Moreover, the way the situation reads is as if she has done her best to perpetuate this relationship, even after realizing it was more or less dead some time ago.  But now, the vocalist is able to admit to herself that it is in fact over.

However as implied above, she is not taking this realization lying down.  So in the process of coming to grips with the inevitable, LP references “heroes”, “demons”, ‘changing seasons’ and all types of philosophical stuff. And it would seem that the conclusion she has come to is that true romance does not solely consist of passionless sex, as apparently the featured her relationship with third lady has degenerated to. So instead of remaining in a situation that is hurting her emotionally though perhaps pleasing her physically, the narrator is ‘waving goodbye’ to this association.

And it could also be argued that on a macrocosmic level, LP is speaking to the concept of disassociating one’s self from any aspect of a person’s life that is, most simply put, depressing.

So it’s like the conclusive argument is that at the end of the day it isn’t worth it to force yourself to remain in a situation that is making your life miserable from an emotional perspective.

But whereas LP is from the United States, the bulk of her chart success has actually been experienced in Europe. For instance, thus far only one of her five studio albums she has dropped, 2014’s “Forever For Now”, has managed to appear on the Billboard 200 and even in that regard peaking on the bottom half of the list.

But it should be noted that three of her aforementioned albums have broken the top 10 of Billboard’s Top Heatseekers chart.

Interpretation of “Goodbye”: By Another Hand

This song is a stark sentimental contrast to the track that precedes it, “When We Touch“, on LP’s “Churches” album. On the aforementioned track, the vocalist seems to come to the realization that breaking up with her ex was a mistake.

But this time around, more or less against the same type of backdrop, LP takes a more casual approach, rather realizing that sometimes saying “goodbye” is a better option, even if she is stricken with post-breakup loneliness. Or put differently, she presents us human beings as being generally fickle souls, whose likes and dislikes “change with the seasons”. And apparently this type of inconsistency translates into our love lives also.

AD

For instance, in the first verse, we see that LP is totally stricken by a certain individual, who she in fact hooks up with. But by the end of the song, she seems more than happy to tell this person “goodbye” – in a number of different languages even.

And on one hand, maybe it can be said that she is mocking her ex, as people tend to do sometimes when they feel cocky after a breakup. But again, at least based on LP’s own explanation, such would not be the case. Instead, in following the chronology of the lyrics it’s more like at first the vocalist was really bent out of shape that this relationship fell apart. But now she has adopted a, shall we say easy-come-easy-go attitude.

And indeed such is sometimes necessary, i.e. putting things in perspective, in the name of getting over heartbreak.

Summary

Most simply put, the singer has made peace with the fact that sometimes in life relationships don’t last.
